How I Learned To Love My PostPartum Body

How I Learned To Love My PostPartum Body

by Yvonne de Salle | Jun 1, 2020 | SERIES: From Ingenue to MomBod, Support

Have you ever looked at yourself in the mirror, shocked at what you see? You pass by the mirror and take one glance and something catches your eye and makes you stop. Maybe it’s your thinning postpartum hair, or the bags under your eyes, but it hits you like a brick....

ABOUT

Sing at Home Mom is a fresh, young blog with a unique angle - to help actors maneuver through that awkward space that exists between parenting and career. The key message of SAHM is to encourage actor-parents to embrace their career "hiatus" while raising their families.

I’m nervous for all the wrong reasons. It’s be I’m nervous for all the wrong reasons. It’s become normal to have anxiety from the minute I drop them off till I pick them up and I fucking hate it.
EXCERPT - “If you find yourself asking yourself EXCERPT - “If you find yourself asking yourself if you’re a failed actor, allow me to remind you that it’s normal to question whether you’ve failed at something when your path in life goes in a different direction than you thought it would. Your worth as a person isn’t defined by this one thing, no matter how dedicated and devoted you were to it in the past. Your value as an actor isn’t defined by this either. You’re more than just your acting career.”

This post was very healing for me to write. For so long I defined who I was by my career. It all came to a head one day when a colleague (who is also a parent and actor) asked me "Do you even consider yourself an actor anymore?" Who was I if I wasn't acting? I should at least be auditioning then I could say I was still 'working at it' but that didn't pan out. I was too tired, too out of shape, too over it. But I realized, I'm not a failure. When I was working, I worked steadily. Every hiatus I took was my choice. And even if it wasn't, so what? I would still be 'working at it' even if I wasn't booking. So please, if you're struggling with 'failure' as an actor-parent, give this post a real read and be kind to yourself. Hopefully this post helps you.

It's a journey every actor goes through, but for women, especially mothers on a career hiatus, it can be especially painful and confusing. Remember, you're more than your resume.

Stay tuned for September’s reflection on (ouch) FAILURE. Look for it in a few days on the blog.

I'm taking you through my journey as an actor – from those starry-eyed days of wanting to be "on the TV" as a kid (Small Wonder, anyone?), to the reality checks, heartbreaking dreams that didn't quite pan out, and the unexpected joys that sneaked in. 🌈

Curious about how to find peace when dreams evolve and change? Want to know how I've embraced the rollercoaster ride and made the most out of every twist and turn? Well, you're in for a treat! 🎉

Let's face it, show business isn't all glitz and glamour. A lot of it is pain and disappointment. As we close out the month, I leave you with these As we close out the month, I leave you with these lyrics from THE PAJAMA GAME.

"I've learned my lesson Mabel,
I'll never be jealous again."
You stick to that now.
"Absolutely."
Now that's easier said than done.
"I can do it."
I knew it.

Special thanks to Sing at Home Mom contributor Becky Potter @tinkbp for lyrics research, and by research, I mean "checking the musical theatre file cabinet in her brain because she's an MT genius" LOL

Remember, your journey is unique and filled with endless possibilities. Don't let professional jealousy dim your light. Embrace the success of others as inspiration, not a threat. Celebrate their achievements, for they are proof that dreams can come true. Focus on your own growth and progress. Set realistic goals, take small steps every day, and trust in your talents. Your path is unfolding beautifully, and your time will come. Keep pushing forward, supporting one another, and nurturing your own artistic flame. You've got this! 🎭🎨✨
